TransAqua announces detailed design consulting contract award for Phase 1 of wastewater treatment facility upgrade project

RIVERVIEW, N.B. – TransAqua – the Greater Moncton Wastewater Commission – today announced the first step in beginning its major wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) upgrade project.

At its most recent public meeting, TransAqua awarded a detailed design consulting contract for phase 1 of the upgrade to CBCL Limited of Moncton. The contract is valued at $395,000.

“It is particularly gratifying to be taking this long-awaited first step in the planned $81-million upgrade of our wastewater treatment facility in Riverview,” said Kevin Rice, General Manager of TransAqua. “There has been a lot of work completed by the Commission and staff to get us to this stage. We continue to work very hard to do our part in ensuring the good health of the Petitcodiac River watershed by upgrading from primary to secondary treatment.

“This first step in a long journey will allow TransAqua to meet new federal standards by 2020,” Mr. Rice said. “The quality of our effluent will be greatly enhanced, allowing us to further help keep the aquatic environment clean.”

Phase 1 of the WWTF upgrade project involves upgrading and expanding the preliminary treatment stage of the process where floatables and heavy material are removed. The septage receiving area will be upgraded, as well, to better receive septic tank material. The tender for construction is expected to be advertised early in 2016 with construction to begin in the spring.

“The Commission is very pleased to begin this major upgrade project that has been discussed for many years, said Winston Pearce, Chair of TransAqua. “All the hard work and effort are now becoming a reality.” We are looking forward to the day next spring when we can finally put the shovels into the ground. At this time, I would like to thank the entire team at TransAqua, including our hard-working staff, our dedicated board of directors and the tri-community support for making this possible.”

"As we ramp up our information activities regarding the upgrade project," Mr. Rice said, "we also want to invite members of the public, elected officials and stakeholders to subscribe to our mailing list so that they receive updates from us on a regular basis. About TransAqua

TransAqua, the Greater Moncton Wastewater Commission (www.transaqua.ca), was established in 1983 to support the wastewater collection and treatment needs of Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview.  Since then, it has developed a 31-kilometre collection network and a treatment facility to best deliver on this mandate. It has also become a leader in the reuse of biosolids through the generation of type ‘AA’ compost (the highest grade currently achieved in Canada) as opposed to disposal in a landfill site. The organization is now positioning itself to further upgrade its facilities to provide an enhanced secondary treatment approach that will allow it to meet recently introduced mandatory federal regulations prior to the 2020 deadline.
